Pits & Fissures
It is the most common dental problem found in children. Chewing teeth have grooves on the surface like mountain and valleys. These grooves are the hiding and dwelling places for oral bacteria’s causing decay since bristles of a brush do not reach to clean that area.
Hence these areas start developing pits and fissures gradually leading to caries.
To prevent this “dental sealants” are applied on the surface of the tooth which covers the grooves and protects it form acid attacks and plaque.
Ideal age to put a sealant is 6 years
There are various reasons for tooth decay in children. The most important being poor brushing habits followed by poor dietary habits and lastly infrequent dental visits.
Fluoride is a mineral which helps to prevent tooth decay in children. Fluoride strengthens teeth by aiding the mineralization on teeth. It prevents the formation of acid causing bacteria.
Fluoride treatment includes:
- Fluoride treatment at the dental clinic
- Brushing with Fluoride added toothpaste or mouthwash
- Addition of fluoride to drinking water
Fluoride treatments commonly are given to children as their teeth are developing between the ages of 6 months and 16 years. Many children having history of cavities get fluoride treatments every six months. The treatments provide extra protection against cavities, even if children already drink fluoridated water.

What is “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay”?
You can avoid this decay
One common way a baby can develop cavities is called “baby bottle tooth decay.” It occurs when a child’s teeth are frequently exposed to sugary liquids for long periods. Among these are milk (including breast milk), formula, fruit juice and other sweetened liquids. Never use the feeding bottles as a pacifier. If you must give your baby a bottle at bedtime or naptime, make sure it contains plain water. Also, you should not give a baby a pacifier that has been dipped in honey or sugar.
Why does my child have chronic bad breath?
Bad breath can be a sign of inflamed or infected tonsils or adenoids, chronic nasal congestion, tooth decay, or gum problems. Consult with your dentist or pediatrician.
What if my child has a tooth knocked out?
Do not scrub or cleanse the tooth. Immediately place it in milk. If this is not available, wrap the tooth in a clean, wet paper towel or cloth and take it and your child to the dentist as quickly as possible. Many times, the tooth can be re implanted into the tooth socket, given this quick thinking attention.
